The Matarromera winemaking group won top prize in the “Management for Sustainable Development” category. HRH the Prince and Princess of Asturias awarded Carlos Moro, President of Matarromera Group, the European Environment Prize.

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 30, 2012 -- Thanks to its project “Matarromera Sostenible en el Planeta Tierra,” The Matarromera Group of Spain has recently added another award to its already extensive list of acknowledgements. This time Fundación Entorno - BCSD España has recognised Matarromera’s commitment to sustainability and environment, giving it a prize in the 2011/2012 Spanish section of the European Environment Awards. Matarromera is present in the four Destinations of Origin surrounded by the Duero River: Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Toro and Rueda.

The award ceremony took place on March 8th in the Assembly Hall of CSIC (National Research Council of Spain) in Madrid, Spain. Carlos Moro was chosen to speak before HRH, the Prince and Princess of Asturias on behalf of all prize-winners. In his speech, the Matarromera Group President commented, “We are aware that commitment to sustainability and respect of the environment are not obligations; instead they are incentives, a new focus on which to build a future in which all of us are main players.”

Matarromera Group - Known for their highly rated wines, the Matarromera Group currently exports to over 50 countries. The six wineries of the Group are housed in sustainable buildings, and all energy practices performed by the Group in its various production centers save 400 tons of emission of CO2 to the atmosphere. The company recently launched American operations to market their wines, and is already working with leading distributors such as Southern Wines & Spirits as they proceed with developing a national footprint. With multiple price points and offerings, current accolades for Matarromera wines include a 93 point rating in Wine Spectator for Bodega Matarromera Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva 2001.

European Environment Awards - Created in 1987 to celebrate the International Year of the Environment, the Awards are held every two years and are the most prestigious prizes in the field of sustainable development in business. For the prize-winners, the Awards are a significant acknowl¬edgement of their efforts and the competition is open to the 27 member countries of the European Union as well as candidates for accession into the EU.

The Awards aim to highlight policies and practices, processes and products, from all business sectors within the European Union, that support progress towards “economic and social development without detriment to the environment and natural reserves, the quality of which development and continued human activity depends on.”

All prize-winners in various categories at this edition of the Spanish section (winners and runners-up) will have the opportunity to take part in the European final, where projects from the 27 State members will compete. This May, European winners will be presented at an event in Brussels, organised by the European Commission within the framework of “Green Week” celebrations.
